Reuben Centre in the Mukuru area of Nairobi was one of the first primary schools to join the Ghetto Classics, Orchestra for Schools Initiative in 2016. 50 students learnt the Link Up recorder curriculum over one year culminating in a performance with the KNYO in October that year. The students and staff showed so much determination and dedication for music that we introduced violin lessons.
Fast forward to 2018 the violin students performed front and centre at the Link Up concert at KICC. The decision was then made that they were ready to have their own Ghetto Classics Orchestra.
During the April holidays Ghetto Classics Mukuru opened its doors to 60 enthusiastic students who learnt a variety of instruments and at the end of their 3 weeks of teaching performed as an Orchestra. Teaching happens at the Reuben centre on Saturday mornings and every day during the school holidays.
