Ghetto Classics Mukuru Holiday Camp

Ghetto Classics Mukuru Holiday Camp

Over the August holiday Ghetto Classics Mukuru had a 2 week intensive musical camp at their base at the Reuben Centre in Mukuru Kwa Reuben.

The Camp kicked off quite well on the 13th of August. The kids were excited. We mainly had 3 sessions: the students went to their instrument sectionals in the morning from 9 -10.30 am. After tea break we resumed for a tutti section until 1pm when we stopped for lunch. In the afternoon the Choir had their training sessions.

We had two visiting band teachers from Australia – Steve and Jessica who joined us on Thursday and helped us with the brass section as well as singing in the afternoon. We utilised the band method in the absence of most of the tutors and the students were mostly in sections i.e. brass, woodwinds, strings and percussion. Simon, Rogin and Elvis volunteer on Thursday and Friday and played with the kids.

The singing in the afternoon took place for the students who wished. They worked on two songs for Thursday recital :

  • To the children of the world – Steve Korcherhans
  • Kuliko Jana – Sauti Sol

In the 2nd week, we worked on some items in sectional and 2 orchestral pieces for the recital to be held on our last day of the camp – 23rd  August at 11 am. Generally there were hardly any hitches in the program. At the end of the holiday session the students improved in both individual and group playing.

Our recital went on well. Students sang and played most of the pieces they had learnt. We had invited some of the kids’ parents, teachers and workers of the school and Ruben centre. Below are some of the sights from the concert held on the final day.
