Orchestra For Schools
The Orchestra for Schools Initiative is the outreach programme of the Ghetto Classics Orchestra. In partnership with the Weill Music Institute at Carnegie Hall we work as an after-school programme in 5 serving 290 students in Nairobi, 250 in Mombasa, and 40 at the Ngong Dumpsite, supported by an average pool of 476 instruments across all locations.
The programme utilises the Link Up Recorder curriculum by Carnegie Hall to teach music to school-age students. The format of the curriculum remains consistent year after year, but the content varies in order to expose youth to different genres and styles of music, such as Orchestra Sings, Orchestra Moves, Orchestra Rocks, and Orchestra Swings. Although it was closed during the pandemic, we were able to reopen the programme thanks to the help of the Segal Foundation and the TO Foundation.
